If you want to perennialize your tulips, it’s important to leave at least two sets of leaves on the stem when harvesting to replenish the bulb and give it energy to bloom the following season. Here at Dahlia May, we grow our tulips for cut flower production, meaning that we treat our tulips as annuals, and pull up the entire plant, bulb and all, during harvest. In your home garden, there is no need to lift the bulb in the spring after flowering. Allow the foliage of your plant to die back naturally after blooming, as this process helps nourish the bulb for the subsequent year.
